Day Trip to Sunnylands (aka The Annenberg Estate)

Hidden behind pink block walls in Rancho Mirage, be sure to visit Sunnylands (aka the Annenberg Estate) when in Palm Springs (it’s about a 15 minute drive from The Monkey Tree Hotel).  This is the former home of the Annenberg Family and the gardens and estate are now available for public tours.  You’ll be in good company…Frank Sinatra was married here and Queen Elizabeth II visited as well.

In the 1960’s, Walter and Leonore Annenberg hired A. Quincy Jones to design their West Coast residence in Rancho Mirage.  (Their East Coast residence was in Wynnewood, PA)  A. Quincy Jones was know for his statement roofs and as you can see from the “parfait pink” roof, he surely provided a statement for the Annenbergs.  The Annenbergs traveled a great deal and many of the sculptures around the property were replicas of things they had seen and admired.  An example of this is the massive column at the entry – replicated from a trip to Mexico.

The grounds are stunning and here are a few photos of the areas outside of the home.  Can you picture yourself lounging by the pool?

a green lawn with a white roof above it. in the distance another white building

two white lounge chairs sitting on a pink concrete pad at the edge of a pool

a green lawn with green hedges and behind the hedges a white house with a white shade awning

To tour the estate, you must buy tickets in advance -and they do sell out quickly.  Tickets go on sale one month prior to visits and are given Thursday through Sunday.  The tour groups are small – just 7 in each tour and tours leave every 15 minutes.  The cost is $45 per person.

The following photo were take from the Sunnylands website (for security reasons, you are not allowed to take photos inside the house).  This is a photos of the shared living room in the guest house.  This was by far my favorite room.  (If you’ve been to The Monkey Tree Hotel, you can guess why…the POP of yellow!)
